Spoke with Whitney before I published it. You make good points and Whitney knows there is absolutely no disrespect intended. The Surfing industry describes girl/women’s surfing often as girl this or that. Like the term Surfer girl. Also as a title it seems to catch more attention this way. There are titles and then there is content. I think Whitney expressed herself nicely. Whitney is as you say a very talented and intelligent woman. She recently graduated from college and continues to perfect her skill as a surfboard builder. I will keep your comments in mind though for future articles or interviews I plan on doing with females in our industry. Thanks for contributing.

Great story, but referring to this talented woman as a ‘girl’ seems slightly belittling. I also think it was unnecessary to emphasise the fact that she is a ‘girl’ surfer in the first place. Shouldn’t the article itself highlight this point? It just seems odd, because it’s not as if anyone ever says ‘we did an interview with boy shaper Al Merrick’. Apart from that, an insightful interview.
