What I dig about Cheyne is his unique style. Like his contemporaries, his style is looks like no other. Cheyne and Rabbit and Dane and MR all had absolutely unique individual styles. When they were up and riding there was no doubt about who you were looking at. None of them looked like anyone else. Not like today. It must have been so fulfilling for Cheyne to win the Quick Masters after coming in second so many times. Cheyne is a true surfer's surfer. In my opinion Michael Tomson made a mistake dropping Cheyne. He was the coolest guy they had. His individuality should have been Gotcha's angle. Oh well, MT is still epic. Surfers today should watch video of early 80's surfing. Richard Cram, Richard Schmidt, Martin Potter.

Pablo,
Read the other article here called, " The history of the modern short board." Gives Geoff proper credit. Simon called him the first father of the thruster. I don't think Cheyne get's his due credit for his contributions to the no nose design and others during that time either. Even his style of surfing is more like the surfing we see today. A true original.

And don't forget the Mc Coy design boards with Cheyne riding them also brought in the no nose surfboard. It was like the short board revolution again. Everyone was carving inches off the width of their noses. You didn't need that nose area if you able to surf like Cheyne. I'm sure we can thank Geoff Mc Coy as much as we can Simon for the Thruster.

This is not a "feel good" surf movie; but it is a "must see". In a world where success is measured in trophies, cash, and fame... Cheyne follows a different path. You can see that the board IS working... and you can see and feel the resentment that is aimed at him. Initially, and prior to seeing SIB, he was my favorite surfer; but after viewing this several dozen times (VHS!) I concluded that he is my favorite person ever (so sorry Mom!). Easy to admire somebody who will "sacrifice" for the greater good. Decades later, Cheyne is remembered for his surfing, his fitness, his openness... and the amazing experimentation that he did with board/fin configurations. A defiant fist in the air... and a reluctant acceptance that he stood alone, make for some emotional moments in this film. View the movie, and draw from it what you will, but a huge part of the person I am today (surfer/skater/ Ironman/ Lifeguard) came directly from Cheyne Horan.

Cheyne was an absolute major influence on me....the guy just ripped in and out of the water. Lazor zaps were really fun to ride then and now, and the keel boards were absolutely a revolutionary board to those who looked past the stigma of being on something that did not look like a standard cookie cutter board of the day (or today for that matter)Nothing to me has ever come close to the force which you can lay into those boards off the bottom, and then it's off to the races! I own a copy of Scream In Blue, and at times it can just inspire you, and at other points just ruin you. The man got hammered by the system, but stuck with his beliefs and came out the winner by my standards....something we can all take a clue from. If you get the chance, see this film.....it's not a typical surf porn flick.....
