An innovative Fin

Dubbed “The Spitfire fin “ by our customers because of it’s shape being similar to the wing of a World War II British fighter plane… Surfers who use the Spitfire rave about the lack of drag, speed, and making sections on waves they otherwise miss.
The fin’s vertical plan shape and wide base allow for very short arcs and more freedom of movement. Vertical fins are nothing new, but it’s been awhile since that type of fin experimentation has taken place to enhance the performance of short single fins in the surfing world. It also works excellent on long boards.
The Spitfire fin was conceptualized by Noel Whitman owner of solo surfer.com which is the connection for the Cheyne Horan surfboard line. Noel’s inspiration came as a result of his association with Cheyne and because of Cheyne’s ground breaking experimentation with single fins during the seventies and eighties.
Cheyne rode single fins exclusively on the tour and was four time runner up to the world title. He was also the first to use vertical style single fins in professional competition and won or placed highly in numerous competitions while on the World Tour. Cheyne’s most famous creation was the Winged Keel or Starfin which is pretty much the Spitfire fin but with wings on the tip. Being fans of the Starfin we wanted to create something with similar performance without the sensitivity to board rocker. What we came up with has surpassed our expectations with a versatile, super fast fin that holds in well on most any type of wave.
Industry veteran Larry Allison, co – owner of Fibre Glas Fin company and owner of Probox, was key in helping perfect the foil of the fin and has been the difference in creating just another fin or something that works really well. Larry’s almost 40 years of fin knowledge, and enthusiasm have been invaluable.
The success of the Spitfire Fin has spawned other creations in the line aptly named… The Quad Fire, The Tri Fire and The Bon Fire. These fins are made to be used in Larry’s Probox fin systems. The most expandable fin system on the market and made in the U.S.A.

I own one of these spitfires, and while it’s not necessarily my favorite (LOVE that gullwing!), it’s got to be the lowest drag fin i’ve ever used. Welcome to speed without pumping if you’re coming from more conventional equipment. I highly recommend giving it a try.
