Epoxy Mini Simmons: Steve Forstall Version
Oct 17th, 2009 | By Solo Surfer | Category: Surf Design
One of the more interesting movements with some of today’s shapers is a surfboard called the Mini Simmons. Named after the old board builder Bob Simmons who came up with the outline and theory.
The Mini Simmons fits perfectly into the current underground movement of short and wider. They are very easy to paddle because of the flatter rocker, and float really well because of their thickness and width.

Not that high volume short boards are new for today’s underground, but one of the differences with the Mini is they are still made to glide through turns like a much longer boards while still being able to do some performance oriented moves.
Those that have jumped on this board movement have found something that allows a variety of surfers to ride them… whether they be a 50 year old over 200 pounds or an 18 year old in perfect shape.
As the movement has progressed, a few of the more creative shapers have begun shaping them. With most, it seems much of their emphasis with the shapes has been with the beautiful gloss and color work… as this design seems radiate style.
Some shapers like Steve Forstall, have decided to see if it’s possible to add a touch of ingenuity to the design by using some new and high tech materials.
Steve shaped this board out of his coda core foam using some newer laminating epoxy resin which hardens within minutes rather than hours. He was able to attach the fins (which he made himself ) directly to the laminated surfboard.

Great site! I have not had enough time to check it out thoroughly, but I like what I have seen so far.
